About KOINEU
About KOINEU — A Project by 일리케 (Ilike)
Hi. I’m 일리케 — a nickname I coined from my old online handle ilikeafrica, taking just the ilike part and playing with Korean pronunciation to get 일리케 (pronounced “il-li-keh”).
I’m not a professional researcher. I don’t work at a university or a tech company. I’m just someone who finds academic papers genuinely fascinating, but kept hitting the same wall everyone does: the sheer volume of new research published every single day makes it impossible to keep up. ArXiv alone publishes thousands of new papers every week. Most of them never get read outside of their immediate specialist community. That bothered me.
Why I Built This
In 2023, I started experimenting with ways to make research papers more accessible — not just translated or summarized, but actually understandable to someone who isn’t already an expert in that specific subfield. I wanted to know: what is this paper actually saying, and why does it matter?
Over two years, that experiment grew into KOINEU. The name loosely blends knowledge and new — because the whole point is making new knowledge accessible to anyone willing to look.
How It Actually Works
KOINEU is a hybrid system. I built a pipeline that:
- Fetches papers from arXiv across physics, mathematics, computer science, biology, and more
- Converts PDFs to browser-readable HTML so you can read them without downloading anything
- Generates research summaries and bilingual (English / Korean) explanations
But here is the part I care about most: I personally review categories, write editorial roundups, curate featured papers, and check anything that looks wrong in the automated output. The system does the heavy lifting; I make sure the result is actually useful to a real person.
I’m especially drawn to research that crosses disciplinary boundaries — a physics paper that uses machine learning, a statistical method finding new life in genomics, a robotics advance rooted in neuroscience. These tend to get overlooked, but they are often the most interesting.
What KOINEU Is (and Isn’t)
KOINEU is a reading and discovery tool. It is not a peer-reviewed journal, and the summaries here are not a substitute for reading the original paper. Every page links directly to the source PDF on arXiv. If you are doing serious research, please go to the original.
That said, if you are a curious person who wants to understand what is happening at the frontier of science — without needing a PhD in each field — I hope KOINEU is useful to you.
